The Yellow Mandarin Goby, also known as the Target Mandarin Goby or Psychedelic Goby, is a stunning and vibrant fish species highly prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. Scientifically named Synchiropus picturatus, these gobies are known for their breathtaking colors and unique characteristics.

Here's a closer look at the Yellow Mandarin Goby:

1. **Appearance:** Yellow Mandarin Gobies are small, reaching an average size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6.5 to 7.5 centimeters). They have elongated bodies with a predominantly bright blue or green base color adorned with intricate orange squiggles and patterns, resembling a work of art. Their striking appearance is what makes them a "target" for aquarists.

2. **Behavior:** Yellow Mandarin Gobies are known for their peaceful and slow-moving nature. They have a distinctive way of swimming and are often seen hovering gracefully above the substrate. Their vibrant colors and unique swimming style make them a captivating addition to any reef tank.

3. **Tank Setup:** To provide suitable care for Yellow Mandarin Gobies, it's crucial to have a well-established marine aquarium with plenty of live rock structures and hiding places. These gobies thrive in tanks with ample live rock because they feed on tiny organisms known as copepods and amphipods that live in the rock and sand bed.

4. **Feeding:** Yellow Mandarin Gobies are primarily carnivorous and have a specialized diet. They are known for their reliance on copepods and amphipods as their primary food source. In a home aquarium, it can be challenging to provide a sufficient copepod population for them to graze on. As a result, aquarists often need to supplement their diet with live or frozen copepods, enriched Artemia, and other small, meaty foods. Ensuring a stable copepod population in the tank is essential for their long-term health.

5. **Compatibility:** Yellow Mandarin Gobies are generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive tankmates. However, they can be territorial with their own kind, so it's best to keep only one Yellow Mandarin Goby per tank unless you have a very large aquarium. It's also advisable to introduce them to a well-established tank where a copepod population has had time to develop.

6. **Water Parameters:** Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), a pH level of 8.1 to 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Regular water changes are crucial to maintain water quality.

The Yellow Mandarin Goby is a prized addition to reef aquariums, known for its captivating appearance and peaceful demeanor. Keep in mind their specialized dietary requirements and the need for a well-established tank with a copepod population to ensure their long-term health and well-being.
